Omega-3

How to choose a good omega-3: origin, purity and freshness

Not all omega-3s are the same. The real amount, the source species and how the oil is protected make the difference between a basic and an advanced omega-3. These are the criteria we use.

The five criteria

  1. Real amount: milligrams of EPA and DHA per serving.
  2. Origin: the species the oil comes from.
  3. Freshness: how the oil is protected from oxidation.
  4. Format: how many softgels you need and how easy they are to take.
  5. Transparency: a label that declares everything.

Real amount: EPA + DHA per serving

Look at the milligrams of EPA and DHA in the daily dose, not the milligrams of oil or the size of the softgel. A useful trick for comparing prices: work out how much 100 mg of EPA + DHA costs you.

Origin: the species matters

Small fish, such as anchovy or sardines, feed at the base of the food chain and live for a short time. That is why they accumulate far fewer heavy metals than large predatory species.

The higher up the food chain a species is, the more heavy metals it accumulates over its lifetime. Anchovy sits at the base.

An oil from a single species, with a declared origin, is also a guarantee of traceability. We tell you about ours in Cantabrian anchovy omega-3.

Freshness and protection against oxidation

Omega-3s are delicate fats: oxygen, light and heat alter them over time. A good omega-3 is protected with antioxidants, and the most widely used is vitamin E.

EU-authorised health claim

Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

The 3 daily softgels of our omega-3 provide 40 mg of natural vitamin E (333% NRV).

At home, keep it tightly closed in a cool, dry place, away from heat and direct light.

Format and convenience

The best formula is the one you take every day. Look for a clear daily dose, a reasonable number of softgels and an oil that is gentle on the palate. Taking it with a meal is the ideal way to enjoy it.

The EPA and DHA. They are the omega-3s that count and the ones named in the authorised claims.

Why does the fish species matter?

Because small fish from the base of the food chain, such as anchovy, accumulate far fewer heavy metals than large species.

What is vitamin E for in an omega-3?

It helps protect the oil from oxidation and also contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

How should I store omega-3?

With the bottle tightly closed, in a cool, dry place, away from heat and direct light.
